Choosing a Ceramic Adhesive: How to Pick the Right Product

Choosing a ceramic adhesive is one of the most decisive factors in whether a tiling application lasts for years. The wrong tile adhesive can cause hollow spots, cracking, blistering and tiles coming loose within a short time. This guide summarises the criteria you should use to select the right ceramic bonding mortar.

Tile size and weight matter most

A standard adhesive may be enough for small tiles, but large-format tiles, granite ceramics and porcelain require products with higher bonding strength. The larger and heavier the tile, the more important the adhesive's grip and slip resistance become.

Match the product to the substrate

Concrete, screed, gypsum plaster, existing tiles or waterproofed surfaces all behave differently. Non-absorbent or moving substrates call for flexible (deformable) adhesives. In every case the surface must be clean, sound, dust-free and load-bearing.

Indoor or exterior facade?

For exteriors, wet areas, pools and terraces exposed to water and temperature swings, use high-performance adhesives resistant to freeze-thaw cycles and moisture. For indoor wall coverings, standard-class products are sufficient for most projects.

What do C1 and C2 classes mean?

Cement-based adhesives are classified under TS EN 12004. Broadly, C1 denotes standard adhesion and C2 high adhesion performance; extra letters mark properties such as slip resistance (T) and extended open time (E). The tile type and application area determine which class is appropriate.

Application tips

• Remove dust and loose particles from the surface before application.
• Prepare the mix strictly to the water ratio on the packaging.
• Use a notched trowel of the right size; apply double-sided buttering for large tiles.
• Place the tile before the open time expires and press firmly to avoid voids.
